Should Pastors be concerned about their physical health?

I ask this question and it really is rhetorical because of course we (I am a pastor so I am included in this) should be concerned about our physical health. Instead I write this because even though I wanted to be concerned about my health I have seen my my weight go up and down over the years…mostly up!

One of the hardest thing over the last few years for me is seeing that no matter how hard I try to eat healthier and exercise I still have found it nearly impossible to lose weight. Maybe it is because I am in my 40’s now or maybe it is because I eat to be entertained. The problem is still the same. I have watched myself and some of my friends try different DIETS and quick FIXES only to still feel frustrated, or see them end back where they started.

This past December I watched my weight go up about 8 pounds from Thanksgiving to Christmas. I had horrible reflux and had to sleep sitting up most nights. It wasn’t until about 3 am that I could lay flat on my bed. I couldn’t sleep. I didn’t feel good.  I even remember sitting on the stage teaching one Sunday and seeing my stomach looking way to big. I didn’t want to be up teaching in front of people about their spiritual health when I couldn’t even keep control on my physical health.

It was frustrating. I was done. I knew I was ready to do whatever it took to lose weight. The problem is I didn’t want to do the Keto diet. I had tried that before and I always plateaued. Plus I couldn’t have any sugar or it would mess everything up. Did I mention how much I love food?

So instead I reached out to a friend of mine that I saw had lost a ton of weight and did the unthinkable…he and his wife both have kept it off for over a year. I called him and said, I am ready to do something. I have to make a change. My health, my weight affects me in life and ministry.  He told we what he was doing and I didn’t even have to hesitate.  This health plan was made for me. I wasn’t looking for pills or patches or to drink shakes all day.  I wasn’t looking for having to count my calories and have to think about everything I was going to eat.  I was busy. I wanted SIMPLE, I wanted EASY, and I wanted something that would WORK!  This was it. The only thing I had to pay for was some food and since I was already paying for food I thought, hey this is easy enough.

Here is a picture of me and some of my friends who have taken the step to better health.  I am the one on the middle left!

So, I started in Jan and have lost 50 pounds. I am at the weight I was in my early 20’s and have no reflux anymore. I am living proof that this works. It is not a quick fix diet.  It is a health plan that now allows for me to feel better and now I don’t have to stumble over my words when I speak into people’s lives for their physical health.
